Hey everyone out there in POP land! I just finished an amazing book called The Kite Runner buy Khaled Hosseini (wow, that sounded very Reading Rainbow!!) Anyhoo, here is what Amazon had to say about it:
"In his debut novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini accomplishes what very few contemporary novelists are able to do. He manages to provide an educational and eye-opening account of a country's political turmoil--in this case, Afghanistan--while also developing characters whose heartbreaking struggles and emotional triumphs resonate with readers long after the last page has been turned over. And he does this on his first try.
The Kite Runner follows the story of Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant. As children in the relatively stable Afghanistan of the early 1970s, the boys are inseparable. They spend idyllic days running kites and telling stories of mystical places and powerful warriors until an unspeakable event changes the nature of their relationship forever, and eventually cements their bond in ways neither boy could have ever predicted. Even after Amir and his father flee to America, Amir remains haunted by his cowardly actions and disloyalty. In part, it is these demons and the sometimes impossible quest for forgiveness that bring him back to his war-torn native land after it comes under Taliban rule."
Several of my friends have read it as well & everyone got compeletly sucked into it. When I got close to the end, I only read like a page or two cause I didn't want it to end...

UGG
my mom is reading it now & she can't put it down either!

sashak, this book really freaked me out when i read it.... esp the rapes.
2Sounds great! I've heard great reviews about this book. I'll def be checking it out!
3i couldn't get over it for like a week....
4OMG, really???
5yeah, there are some pretty disturbing parts, but I still loved it. I think its to emphasize that the Taliban, a supposedly uber-religious group, is just plain f*cking evil. It came out in '03 & I don't remember when US forces invaded Afghanistan, I think alot of people really didn't know how bad they were/are. I really didn't know anything about the country at all, esp. not the pre-Soviet invastion period.

I know.. I definitely got a great history lesson.. it was hard to get past some of the language at first, but this is one of my most favorite books. There are some great twists.. and it was really great to read about how the country operated before violence started ruling it.
It's a very powerful book. I recommend it, highly.
7blondesugar... i know tons of people who read this and i'm the only one who had this really violent reaction of disgust to it.... i think you should read it and tell us what you think!
8I read this when it first came out and it was very good. Gives you a whole different perspective on Afghanistan and it's people and culture. Two thumbs up, Sashak!
9I really loved this book. I thought it had so much meat to it and tackled so many issues. This might be one of my Top 10 all time I liked it so much.
10I couldn't get this book out of my head. It's so haunting. Beautiful. Not easy to read, but you can't put it down. It's a work of art, truly.
11Lisa Toad -- The rapes made me physically ill; I had those images in my mind for weeks. It was not an easy book to read. But I'm ultimately very glad that I read it.
12The book is very powerful, providing a lot of insight into culture and friendship. I learned a great deal about history and politics while reading about the rise of the Taliban and the devastation they brought to the land and the people of Afghanistan. A family friend came to the U.S. as a young teen in the early 70s; his family remains there today. I thought of him as I was reading and of his tales of the once beautiful Afghan country side that is now destroyed.
13its just so moving. to think that a once thriving modern culture has been completely destroyed over & over is so sad
14great book!
15you should read- Anderson Cooper-dispatches from the edge
