The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger is one of the best books I've read in a long time.
The plot revolves around Henry, a guy with a strange quirk in his genetic code that makes him travel through time. At unexpected and unpredictable moments, Henry suddenly pops out of his 'present' and into his past or his future. On one of his trips, he meets his wife Claire as a little girl of six. He keeps returning to this time and they develop a close friendship. However, when Claire is 21 and meets Henry in his 'present' he doesn't yet know who she is.
This book has a very interesting premise and it's incredibly romantic and heart-wrenching. It's clear that Henry is Audrey Niffenegger's idea of the perfect guy: He's sweet and romantic, but at the same time a bit of a bad boy.
As I got towards the end of the book, I literally starting bawling... and mind you, I was on a long international flight and the guy sitting next to me kept patting me on the shoulder to make me feel better as I went through tissue after tissue.
Finally, this book has an added bonus for any fan of 80's music - it features the Violent Femmes, Prince and many other favorites!
I give it
(i'm getting to be quite the book critic!)
Elizabeth and James
Stuart Weitzman
Sonia Rykiel
I SO want to read this book. Maybe I'll ask for it for Christmas... along with the box set of Quantum Leap (not to compare the 2 though!)
1
i LOVE quantum leap! i always used to watch that! haha... this book is awesome
2I read this book and have bought it a couple times and given it away to others to read even more times. It's fantastic! I've had it on my profile page since I joined TeamSugar.
I bawled my eyes out reading this book, too.
I'm a little disappointed in hearing that Plan B (Brad and Jen's production company (I'm not sure who owns it now)) bought the rights to it with the plan of having Brad play Henry. I just don't see that. AT ALL.
I think this is my number one favorite book of all time.
3I've always wanted to read this but haven't had the chance. Is it that good???
4This sounds good Liza.. I have to go get a book for my flight in December, I'll see if I can find this one!
5it really is THAT good... haha.. i really can't see brad as henry either... i COULD see Christian Bale as henry though, what do you think SweetPeasMom?
Karmasb*tch - you can find all over the place now, it's been on bestseller lists for a long time
6Sound good..one my list for a xmas present.
Brad in anything works for me..so does Bale. Reminds me of when Redford bought the rights to Horse Whisper and cast himself as the romantic lead (WTF).. the had so many filters on him to hide his age it always looked like he was acting thru a fog!
7I kind of pictured John Corbett (Aidan on SATC).
Even Big for that matter.
Someone handsome and broad shouldered, who could do clean cut. Not too chiseled, though.
And someone said Kate Winslet was up for Claire. Um, no. Not what I pictured, either.
8I'm a chick lit fan but I definitely will pick this one up. Thanks for the review.
9I read this one a few months ago. My mum and grandmother picked it up secondhand for a couple of bucks at a garage sale. The original owner hadn't read it. Mum started reading it but thought it was more my style, handed it on to me, and I couldn't put it down. Loved it. Thoroughly recommend it.
I can't picture Brad and Kate as Henry and Claire. But I have a lot of difficulty with film adaptions of books I've loved, so that's not really too surprising. I read Girl With a Pearl Earring after it's adaption and still haven't seen the film - I may not even watch it because I loved the book too much. I recently read The Other Bolyn Girl, which is also being made into a film. I enjoyed that book immensly too (I don't know what it is about historical novels and time travel with me at the moment - I seem to gravitate towards both themes).
I'm re-reading the novel London right now. It's a bit of an epic - I first read it about 4 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you like reading books that are so thick they're difficult to hold up, then this is one for you!
10Wow...one of my friends was reading this a while back, and she said something along the lines of, "this is so good, you should read it!" And then I totally forgot about it. I'm going to have to ask her if I can borrow it...thanks for the review!
11I'm going to Italy in January; I'm totally buying this book to read on the flight!
