Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradley (with Ron Powers)
James Bradley is the son of John Bradley, one of the men raising the flag in what he calls "The Photograph" -- this famous image, taken by Joe Rosenthal, of six men raising an American flag at the summit of Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima.
This book is the story of Bradley and the five other men in The Photograph -- how they came to be in it and what happened to them afterwards.
Bradley's honest, blunt style of writing is great; he doesn't sugar-coat the story or dramatize it; he gives the simple facts. But he does so with a respect and candor that gives the reader the feeling that they're hearing the whole story, here -- not a glamored-up Hollywood version of the events.
This is a great read; a must-read for history buffs and patriots.
