The future utopian society/conspiracy theme is not really a new one, though it's one I've always enjoyed. Westerfeld adds an original twist to his version. In Uglies, everyone has an operation at the age of 16 to become astonishingly beautiful, or pretty. The theory behind it is that if everyone is beautiful, then no one can be prejudiced based on looks or skin color as the Rusties (i.e. us, our present day civilization) once did. You’ll find a lot of the same interesting commentary underlying throughout the series.
Tally Youngblood is a fifteen-year-old ugly who, like most of her peers, wants nothing more than to be pretty. When her friend Shay escapes to evade the operation and join a rebellion outside the city, the authorities give Tally an ultimatum. She must find and bring back Shay or she’ll never be pretty.
Reading is easy, fast-paced and action-packed with tons of hoverboard sequences and jumping off buildings in bungee jackets. These young adult books are geared toward a teenage audience but its appeal reaches adults too. I found the entire series exhilarating and a whole lot of fun!

UGG
It's quite an addictive series; I've read all four (including Extras), and when I read them, I can't put them down!
1I haven't read Extras yet but I have it on hold at the library.
2Sounds like it would make a fun movie.
3Haha, yeah I could see that. A series even.
4someone gave it to me as a gift, so i will probably read it soon. good to hear you all like it!
5I think you'll enjoy it pirateyzaclover!
on free books!
6I just have to say that I started Extras and I'm definitely finding it a worthy follow up to the Uglies trilogy! Popularity rank society, feeds for everyone, paparazzi hovercams?? Clever observations! Some of these Japanese pretties have eye operations to look like actual manga characters! How fun is that???!!
7I LOVE the series, and pretty much anything Scott Westerfeld. I agree with k squared, it's so addictive that I must've read the whole series more than fifty times already! Oh, and Extras is my favorite out of the four.. gotta love radical honesty..
8I want to read these books so badly, but everytime I try to order them, someone else gets to them first.
